Der koreanische Batteriezellhersteller LG Energy Solution hat eine weitere Gigafabrik für Nordamerika angekündigt. Die Produktionsstätte mit einer Jahreskapazität von elf Gigawattstunden soll in Queen Creek im US-Bundesstaat Arizona entstehen. In dem Werk sollen zylindrische Zellen zur Belieferung von Kunden wie Tesla, Lucid Motors und Proterra hergestellt werden. Der Bau der Anlage, der offiziellen Angaben zufolge 1,4 Milliarden US-Dollar kostet, soll im zweiten Quartal 2022 beginnen und zum Produktionsstart im Jahr 2024 abgeschlossen sein.

LG kommt Panasonic und CATL zuvor

LG Energy Solution reagiert mit der Veröffentlichung der eigenen Unternehmenspläne auf die Aussage von Tesla-CEO Elon Musk, dass in zwei bis drei Jahren die Batterieproduktion der begrenzende Faktor bei der Fahrzeugproduktion sei. Mit der Festlegung des Standortes ist LG dem japanischen Hersteller Panasonic und dem chinesischen Unternehmen CATL zuvorgekommen, die sich derzeit nach einem Standort in Nordamerika umsehen.
