Mercedes-Benz hat die Unternehmenspläne für eine Recycling-Fabrik im badischen Kuppenheim konkretisiert. Bereits im November des vergangenen Jahres hatte die Daimler AG ihre Absichten für ein in Süddeutschland basiertes Wiederaufbereitungswerk kundgetan. Die Anlage soll im Jahr 2023 ihren Betrieb aufnehmen.
Gemeinschaftswerk mit Primobius
Die Anlage soll zusammen mit Primobius als Technologiepartner betrieben werden. Das Unternehmen ist seinerseits bereits ein Joint Venture des deutschen Maschinenbaukonzerns SMS Group und des australischen Unternehmens Neometal. Konzernaussagen zufolge wurde bereits im vergangenen Jahr mit dem Aufbau durch die Mercedes-Tochter Licular begonnen.
Recycling-Quote von mindestens 96 Prozent
Als Technologie soll ein mechanisch-hydrometallurgisches Verfahren zum Einsatz kommen und eine Recycling-Quote von mindestens 96 Prozent erzielen. Die Jahreskapazität der Pilotanlage wird mit 2.500 Tonnen Lithium-Ionen-Batterien beziffert, die aus Versuchsfahrzeugen und Anlaufbatterien sowie eventuell auch aus Feldrückläufern stammen sollen. Sowohl Kobalt, Nickel und Lithium als künftig auch Graphit sollen in Batteriequalität zurückgewonnen und direkt in den Wertstoffkreislauf zurückgeführt werden. Durch dieses Vorgehen sollen sich bis zu 70 Prozent CO2 pro Batterie einsparen lassen.
Breite Unterstützung durch Institute
Unterstützt wird das Vorhaben durch das Institut für Aufbereitung, Deponietechnik und Geomechanik (IFAD) der TU Clausthal, durch das Institut für angewandte Materialien und Energiespeicher (IAM-ESS) des Karlsruher Instituts für Technologie und durch das Institut für Technischen Umweltschutz der Technischen Universität Berlin.
