Der schwedische Zellproduzent Northvolt und der ebenfalls aus Schweden stammende Autobauer Volvo haben den gemeinsamen Bau einer Gigafabrik in Göteborg verkündet. Das Werk sei auf ein jährliches Produktionsvolumen von 50 Gigawattstunden ausgelegt und soll 3.000 Arbeitsplätze schaffen. Der Produktionsstart ist für 2025 geplant. Die Fabrik soll das im vergangenen Dezember angekündigte Forschungs- und Entwicklungszentrum ergänzen.
Jedes Jahr Batterien für 500.000 Fahrzeuge
Der Bau der Zellfertigung soll 2023 beginnen. Die für dieses Werk geplanten Zellen sollen speziell für die nächste Generation der Volvo- und Polestar-Modelle entwickelt werden. Die Jahreskapazität von 50 Gigawattstunden soll für eine halbe Million Fahrzeuge ausreichen. Der schwedische Standort des Werks, das in Göteborg gebaut wird, soll Vorteile mit Blick auf eine direkte Verbindung zum größten Automobilwerk von „Volvo Cars“ sowie den Zugang zur Infrastruktur bieten. Zudem wollen Northvolt und Volovo vom starken Angebot erneuerbarer Energiequellen und relevanter Arbeitsplatzkompetenzen sowie von der Nähe zu den Forschungs- und Entwicklungsabteilungen von „Volvo Cars“ und Northvolt profitieren.
