Der britische Chemiekonzern Johnson Matthey hat bekanntgegeben, sich aus dem Geschäft mit Batterierohstoffen zurückzuziehen. Laut offizieller Mitteilung liegt dieser Schritt in einer zu niedrigen erwartbaren Rendite und in der gewachsenen Konkurrenz begründet. In den vergangenen Jahren hatte Johnson Matthey sich im Bereich der Batteriekathodenmaterialien einen Namen gemacht – etwa mit Chemien auf Basis hoher Nickelgehalte.
Auf den Erweiterungsplan folgt die Kehrtwende
Noch im April 2021 hatte das Unternehmen verkündet, eine komplett neue Fabrik für nickelreiches Kathodenmaterial in Finnland aufbauen zu wollen. 30.000 Tonnen Kathodenmaterial sollten künftig die bereits vorhandenen Produktionskapazitäten verstärken. Doch jetzt die Kehrtwende – im Zuge der Mitteilung, dass die potenziellen Renditen aus dem Batterieressourcen-Geschäft keine weiteren Entwicklungsgelder rechtfertigten. Dies sei die zentrale Erkenntnis aus einer detaillierten Analyse zu anstehenden Investitionsentscheidungen des Konzerns gewesen, die auch die Konkurrenzsituation auf dem Markt bewertet habe.
Unternehmen kündigt weitere Stellungnahme an
Plan des Unternehmens sei es nun, das Geschäft mit Batteriematerialien teilweise oder sogar ganz zu verkaufen. Um möglichst zeitnah Klarheit zum weiteren Vorgehen zu schaffen, verkündete der Konzern in seiner Mitteilung eine baldige neue Stellungnahme.
