Das britische und öffentlich-private Joint Venture „West Midlands Gigafactory“ hat Informationen zu seiner geplanten Batteriezellfabrik geteilt. Das Vorhaben zur Herstellung von Elektroautobatterien soll im Jahr 2025 in der Nähe des Flughafens von Coventry den Betrieb aufnehmen und langfristig eine jährliche Produktionskapazität von 60 Gigawattstunden erreichen.
Investor mit 2,5 Milliarden Pfund gesucht
Gründer des Vorhabens sind das „Coventry City Council“ und das Unternehmen „Coventry Airport“. Die Partner haben bis dato vor allem die Voraussetzungen für eine große Batteriezellfertigung geschaffen und suchen derzeit noch einen erfahrenen Akteur, der die Batterieproduktion am Standort errichtet. Ziel sei es, einen Investor aus der Batteriewelt zu finden, der 2,5 Milliarden Britische Pfund bereitstellt. Die Investition soll das Vorhaben mit der unterstützenden Allianz aus lokaler Regierung, Industriebetrieben und Universitäten letztlich ermöglichen. Als Kandidat war zuletzt das slowakische Unternehmen InoBat im Gespräch.
Britische Regierung forciert Batterie-Projekte
Auch abseits der geplanten Gigafactory ist die britische Politik seit einiger Zeit bemüht, die Zukunft des heimischen Automobilstandortes und damit die heimische Wirtschaftsleistung durch die Förderung der Batterietechnik voranzubringen. Neben Forschungsstandorten wie dem „UK Battery Industrialisation Centre“ (UKBIC) wurden daher bereits zahlreiche Rahmenbedingungen geschaffen, die eine industrielle Batterieproduktion auf der Insel fördern. Dadurch wurde etwa ein Vorhaben des Start-up-Unternehmens Britishvolt in Northumberland ermöglicht. Geplant ist außerdem eine Batteriezellproduktion des chinesischen Herstellers Envision, die auf Kapazitäten von ehemals Nissan in Sunderland zurückgreifen soll.
