Das kalifornische Unternehmen Lyten hat für 2025/2026 den Markteintritt einer Lithium-Schwefel- (LiS-) Batterie in Aussicht gestellt. Sie soll 900 Wattstunden pro Kilogramm erreichen und in enger Zusammenarbeit mit der US-Regierung entwickelt worden sein. Bis dato war es etwas ruhiger um neuartige Batterien auf Basis einer Lithium-Schwefel-Zellchemie geworden. Zuletzt hatten eher Natrium-Ionen- sowie Festkörperbatterien die Schlagzeilen dominiert.
Dreimal höhere Energiedichte geplant
Mit der neuen Technologie will Lyten eine im Vergleich zu heute dreimal höhere Energiedichte bereitstellen und eine Ladezyklenbeständigkeit von rund 1.400 erreichen. Die Zellen sollen außerdem für den Betrieb in extremen Temperaturbereichen ausgelegt und in allen gängigen Batterieformaten produzierbar sein. Die Ladezeit der LiS-Zellen liege unter 20 Minuten, und die Technologie sei auf den geringsten CO2-Fußabdruck aller Elektrofahrzeug-Batterien optimiert. So soll die Batterie beispielsweise ohne den Einsatz von Kobalt auskommen.
Hat Lyten mehr Erfolg als „Oxis Energy“?
Die LiS-Technologie war bislang von Hürden in der Marktfähigkeit geprägt – zuletzt erkennbar etwa bei „Oxis Energy“. Das britische Unternehmen hatte im vergangenen Mai ebenso wie heute Lyten ambitionierte Entwicklungen zur LiS-Batterie vorgestellt, ehe „Oxis Energy“ Insolvenz anmelden musste. Laut damaligen Medienberichten ließen notwendige Investoren sich nicht ausreichend von den Entwicklungen überzeugen.
