Wie aus Dokumenten an die örtlichen Behörden hervorgeht, plant Tesla den Bau einer Batterie- und e-Motor Recyclinganlage in China. Der Bau soll in unmittelbarer Nähe zur bereits bestehenden Gigafactory in Shanghai umgesetzt werden. Tesla hatte bereits im Jahr 2019 angekündigt ein „einzigartiges“ Batterierecyclingsystem zu entwickeln.
Zentrale Punkte im Ansatz sind, dass durch das Recycling, welches von einer Vielzahl auch anderer OEMs entwickelt wird, zum Beispiel von VW, die Kosten zur Herstellung von elektrischen Fahrzeugen erheblich reduziert werden können und zum anderen der Nachhaltigkeitsaspekt vom elektrischen Fahren vorangetrieben wird. Dazu sagte Tesla damals: „Eine häufige Frage, die wir hören, ist: „Was passiert mit den Akkus von Tesla-Fahrzeugen, wenn sie das Ende ihrer Lebensdauer erreicht haben?“ Ein wichtiger Unterschied zwischen fossilen Brennstoffen und Lithium-Ionen-Batterien als Energiequelle besteht darin, dass fossile Brennstoffe einmalig abgebaut und verwendet werden, während die Materialien in einer Lithium-Ionen-Batterie recycelbar sind. Wenn Erdöl aus dem Boden gepumpt, chemisch raffiniert und dann verbrannt wird, setzt es schädliche Emissionen in die Atmosphäre frei, die nicht zur Wiederverwendung zurückgewonnen werden. Die Batteriematerialien hingegen werden raffiniert, in eine Zelle eingesetzt und bleiben auch am Ende ihrer Lebensdauer erhalten. Durch Recycling können die wertvollen Bestandteile der Batterie immer wieder verwendet werden.“
