Nachdem vor allem die Festkörperbatterie die Nachrichten rund um die Zukunft der Batteriezelle in der letzten Zeit dominierte und es abseits dieser kaum noch Nachrichten zu anderen Ansätzen gab, macht nun zumindest die Lithium-Schwefelbatterie nochmal von sich reden. Mullen Technologies, ein kalifornisches E-Mobilität Start-Up, plant innerhalb von 5 Jahren 100.000 Fahrzeuge mit Li-S-Batterien zu produzieren.
Die Meldung, dass Mullen Technologies auf die Lithium-Schwefel-Batterie setzen will, kommt überraschend, da bislang kaum Ansätze bekannt waren die Li-S-Batterie in einem industriellen Maßstab einzusetzen. Mullen verspricht sich vom Einsatz der Lithium-Schwefel-Batterie seine Batteriesysteme ca. 60 % leichter bauen zu können, was erheblichen Einfluss auf das Leistungsgewicht der Elektrofahrzeuge hätte. Zudem sei es nach Aussage des Unternehmens möglich durch den Einsatz der Lithium-Schwefel-Batterien die Batteriekosten auf Packebene auf umgerechnet ca. 75 €/kWh zu reduzieren. Zuletzt sei auch der CO2-Fußabdruck der Batteriezelle deutlich geringer als bei bisherigen Batterien.
Die Batteriezellen selbst sollen dabei von Zellhersteller NexTech Batteries geliefert werden, ein Start-Up, dass 2016 gegründet wurde und seinen Hauptsitz in Carson City, Nevada hat und ebenso wie Mullen Technologies bisher weitgehend unbekannt war.
