Mit dem Projekt „BattLife“ hat das neu gegründeten Fraunhofer Batterie-Innovations- und Technologie-Centers BITC am Erfurter Kreuz den Betrieb aufgenommen. Am BITC soll in den kommenden Jahren ein digitalisiertes Test-Center für Batterien und Batteriekomponenten aufgebaut werden. Mit 5 Millionen Euro unterstützt das Land Thüringen das Projektvorhaben, dass im hochwertigen Maßstab Daten aus dem Lebenszyklus der Batterie sammeln soll.

Für das Battlife konnte auch die Unterstützung von der Contemporary Amperex Technology Thuringia GmbH (CATT) gewonnen werden, die in Thüringen tätige Tochtergesellschaft von CATL. CATL plant am Erfurter Kreuz selbst einen großen Batteriestandort. Das Fraunhofer BITC und CATT planen eine enge Kooperation.

Dr. Roland Weidl, Leiter des BITC, sagt zum ersten Projektvorhaben am neuen Standort: „Die Verlängerung der Batterielebenszeit ist für die Weiterentwicklung und die Akzeptanz der E-Mobilität entscheidend. Wir bauen nun ein Test-Center auf, das Batteriezellen in industrienahen Mengen analysiert. Durch die Zusammenarbeit mit CATT können unsere Ergebnisse wieder direkt in den Produktionsprozess einfließen.“

Wolfgang Tiefensee, Thüringens Wirtschafts- und Wissenschaftsminister, ergänzt: „Die Lebensdauer von Batterien ist neben einer guten Ladeinfrastruktur eine der wichtigsten Voraussetzungen, um Elektromobilität zukunftssicher zu machen“

Der Bau des BITCs, dass erst im Juli dieses Jahres den Betrieb aufgenommen hat, wurde über 13,5 Millionen Euro vom Freistaat Thüringen gefördert. Das BITC wird von der Fraunhofer Gesellschaft als Außenstelle des Fraunhofer-Instituts für Keramische Technologien und Systeme IKTS – eines der größten Batterieforschungsinstitute Deutschlands – bezeichnet.
