Das Joint Venture BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA) hat am Standort Tiexi, in China, ein weiteres Batteriezentrum eröffnet, in welchem die neuen Batterien der fünften Generation BMW eDrive Technologie für den vollelektrischen BMW iX3 produziert werden sollen. Mit dem neuen Werk ergänzt BMW das bereits 2017 in China eröffnete „High-Voltage Battery Center“, BMWs erste Batteriefabrik im Land.
Mit der Eröffnung des neuen Werks in China hebt BMW die besondere Bedeutung des Marktes, vor allem auch im Rahmen der Elektromobilität hervor. Aktuell sind bereits fünf elektrifizierte Fahrzeuge auf dem chinesischen Markt verfügbar und 75.000 e-Fahrzeuge wurden bereits verkauft. Im Dezember soll dann der BMW iX3 hinzukommen.
In Bezug auf die Batterietechnik wirbt BMW mit einer „zukunftsweisender Batteriezellen-Technologie [die] von Grund auf neu entwickelt [wurde].“ Die neuen Batteriesysteme sollen flexibel in Leistung und Energiespeichergehalt skalierbar sein und sich somit für den Einsatz in unterschiedlichen Fahrzeugkonzepten eignen. Besonderes Nachhaltigkeitsmerkmal der Batteriezellen der fünften Generation ist, dass die Batteriezellen nur mit „Grünstrom“ produziert werden sollen.
Neben China laufen auch im BMW E-Antriebsproduktion Kompetenzzentrum in Dingolfing die Vorbereitung zur Produktion von Hochvoltbatterien der fünften Generation. Diese sollen wiederum ab dem nächsten Jahr und gezielt für den europäischen Markt für die Modelle BMW iNext und BMW i4 genutzt werden.
