1.600.000 km ist eine gewaltige Distanz. Rund vierzig Runden rund um unseren Erdtrabanten ließen sich damit zurücklegen. Die Batterieforscher von Tesla haben jüngst ihre Testergebnisse einer neuen Zelle publiziert, die genau das bezogen auf die Lebensdauer ermöglichen soll. In stationären Speichern seien Zeiträume von zwei Jahrzehnten kein Problem.

Die initiale Herausforderung bestand in der Entwicklung von Zellen für Roboter-Taxis, die entgegen dem durchschnittlichen Gebrauch einer Privatperson stets vollständig entladen werden, um die Reichweite zu maximieren. Die verwendete Zellchemie basiert auf einem Verhältnis von NMC 532 als „single crystal“. Mit speziell hergestelltem Graphit und einem optimierten Elektrolyten wurden in unterschiedlichen Tests die oben aufgeführten Ergebnisse erzielt. Die größte Herausforderung und limitierende Eigenschaft sind Li inventory loss sowie Zunahme der Impedanz.
