Der chinesische Batteriezellenhersteller Contemporary Amperex Technology Co (CATL) denkt nach Aussage des Europa-Chefs Matthias Zentgraf über eine Expansion nach Nordamerika nach. Das Unternehmen steckt aktuell in Vorbereitungen für den Aufbau des ersten europäischen Werkes in Erfurt mit einer Investition von 1,8 Milliarden Euro. Weitere Planungen erstrecken sich aber über den Atlantik hinaus. Zwar bleibe die Entwicklung der Elektromobilität hinter Europa und China noch zurück, man hoffe aber, dass auch hier der Markt für Batteriezellen ansteigen werde. Der Bau des Werkes in Erfurt soll im vierten Quartal starten und eine Kapazität von bis zu 100 GWh Produktionskapazität bis 2025 erreichen. CATL hat in Europa bereits Verträge mit Automobilkonzernen wie BMW und VW abgeschlossen. Mit Ausblick auf weitere Verträge zieht das Unternehmen bereits weitere Produktionsstätten in der EU in Betracht. Der Batteriezellenmarkt wird derzeit von asiatischen Firmen wie Samsung SDI, LG Chem, SK Innovation, CATL, Svolt und Panasonic dominiert.
