Der US-amerikanische Batterie-Recycler Redwood Materials hat eine Partnerschaft mit der Volkswagen Group of America geschlossen. Die Kooperation soll die Verwertung von Akkupacks aus Elektrofahrzeugen der Marken VW und Audi in den USA regeln. Der Vereinbarung zufolge wird das Recycling sämtlicher Battriepacks der beiden Marken von Redwood abgewickelt.

Anschluss an das Volkswagen-Netzwerk

Redwood soll dazu an das VW-Netzwerk mit mehr als 1.000 Niederlassungen angeschlossen werden, um die sichere Verpackung sowie den Transport zu den Recycling-Zenten zu gewährleisten. Dort werden über 95 Prozent der wertvollen Batteriematerialien Nickel, Kobalt, Lithium und Kupfer aus den Packs zurückgewonnen. Aktuell verarbeitet der Konzern ein Zellvolumen von sechs Gigawattstunden jährlich – ein Großteil des in Nordamerika anfallenden Lithium-Batteriemülls. Die Kapazität soll in den kommenden Jahren stark ausgebaut werden.

Nationale Kreislaufwirtschaft in der Zellfertigung

Besonderen Wert lege der Konzern auf eine nationale Kreislaufwirtschaft, heißt es. So sollen die recycelten Batteriematerialien nicht exportiert, sondern an Zellfertiger in den USA verkauft werden. Da sich der Recycling-Prozess unendlich oft wiederholen lasse, senke dies die Abhängigkeit der Industrie von Primärrohstoffen aus fremdländischen Minen und die damit einhergehende Umweltbelastung.
