InoBat aus der Slowakei und das US-amerikanische Unternehmen Group14 Technologies haben sich zu einer Kooperation zusammengeschlossen. Ziel der Zusammenarbeit sei es, Batterien mit hoher Energiedichte für Automobilanwendungen zu produzieren. Laut Absichtserklärung ist konkret geplant, künftig die Silizium-Anoden von Group14 in Fahrzeugbatterien zu verbauen.
Quantensprünge in der Energiespeicherung notwendig
Die erfolgreiche Elektrifizierung des Verkehrswesens sei von technologischen Durchbrüchen in der Energiespeicherung abhängig, sagt Rick Luebbe, CEO und Mitbegründer von Group14 Technologies. Durch die Partnerschaft mit InoBat lasse sich ein Entwicklungssprung erreichen, von dem Automobilhersteller direkt profitieren könnten.
Da mit der verkündeten Verbesserung eine geeignete Materialbeschaffung für Lithium-Silizium-Batteriematerialien einhergeht, arbeitet Group14 derzeit daran, seine Kapazitäten zu erhöhen. Bereits im Juli meldete das US-Unternehmen dazu ein geplantes Joint-Venture mit dem südkoreanischen Konzern SK Materials. Zusammen mit dem Schwesterunternehmen des Batterieherstellers SK Innovation soll eine Fabrik für Lithium-Silizium-Batterierohstoffe entstehen.
Zunächst auf 120 Tonnen pro Jahr beschränkt
In der Kooperation mit InoBat soll es vorerst wohl nur um geringe Stückzahlen von Lithium-Silizium-Zellen gehen – auch aufgrund der noch fehlenden Verfügbarkeit größerer Rohstoffmengen. Insgesamt sei Group14 Technologies bisher nur in der Lage, pro Jahr 120 Tonnen des patentierten Anodenmaterials SCC55TM zu fertigen. Von dieser Produktionsmenge soll außerdem ein Großteil für Consumer-Electronics-Kunden vorgesehen sein, was wenig Material übrig lässt.
