Ford und SK Innovation stehen offenbar vor einer gemeinsamen Investition für eine neue Batteriefabrik in den USA. Insidern zufolge soll SK-Group-Chef Chey Tae-won das Joint Venture demnächst bekannt geben. Der Manager befindet sich als Teil einer inoffiziellen Wirtschaftsdelegation des ersten Gipfeltreffens von Präsident Moon Jae-in aus Südkorea derzeit bei US-Präsident Joe Biden.

SKI lässt weitere Fabrik in Georgia bauen
Genauere Informationen dazu, in welcher Form und mit welchem Volumen das Joint Venture umgesetzt werden könnte, gibt es bis dato nicht. Bekannt ist jedoch, dass SKI bereits eine zweite Batteriefabrik im Bundesstaat Georgia errichten lässt, die nach der Fertigstellung im Jahr 2023 eine Kapazität von 11,7 Gigawattstunden produzieren soll. Die dort gefertigten Batteriezellen sollten schon vor der aktuellen Meldung für Fords elektrische Variante des F-150-Pickups genutzt werden.

Während seines Aufenthalts in den Vereinigten Staaten will Chey der SKI-Batteriefabrik in Georgia seinen ersten Besuch abstatten. Auch Moon möchte das Werk während seiner viertägigen Reise besuchen. Der SKI-Ford-Deal könnte ein Symbol für die EV-Partnerschaft der beiden Länder sein, sagen Branchenbeobachter.

Große Wende für SKI in den USA?
Die geplante Investition kommt nach einer dramatischen Rettung der US-Geschäftsaktivitäten von SKI vor einem gerichtlich verhängten zehnjährigen Verbot. Die Sanktion war aus einem Rechtsstreit des koreanischen Unternehmens mit dem ebenfalls koreanischem Rivalen LG Energy Solution wegen Technologiestreitigkeiten in den USA hervorgegangen. Eine weitere Partnerschaft mit Ford könnte nach dem aufgehobenen Urteil durch eine außergerichtliche Einigung vor allem für SKI eine Aufbruchstimmung in den USA einleiten.
