LG Energy Solution (LGES) announced that its Arizona-based subsidiary has signed a supply agreement with US automotive manufacturer Rivian. Over a period of five years, LGES will supply 4695-size cylindrical batteries with a total capacity of 67 gigawatt-hours to Rivian.
Production for the North American market
During the first year of production, the batteries will be manufactured at LG Energy Solutionʼs stand-alone facility in Arizona and then be shipped to Rivianʼs facility in Normal, Illinois, where they will be used in the R2 model for the North American market. The battery format has a diameter of 46 millimeters and a height of 95 millimeters. According to the company, these batteries have six times the capacity of the standard 2170 batteries. However, they also have 6.5 times the volume. Nevertheless, LGES claims that the larger size results in higher energy density, better space utilization, and increased safety.
