Norwegian company Hydrovolt, a joint venture between Norsk Hydro and Northvolt, has announced the expansion of its business to France. The company plans to establish recycling capacities in Hordain, located in the heart of the northern French battery valley.
Collection site for EV and industrial batteries
In the first phase, Hydrovolt intends to set up a collection site which enables the discharging and disassembly of electric vehicle (EV) and industrial batteries. According to Hydrovolt, the municipality of Hordain already has a suitable facility with an area of approximately 3,000 square meters. Subject to final approvals, operations are expected to begin in 2025. Northern France was selected due to its role as a growing hub for the battery value chain. The region has already attracted four major investments in battery gigafactories, thanks to its strategic location, skilled workforce, and industrial and automotive heritage.
Leveraging experience from Norway
Hydrovolt operates one of Europeʼs largest recycling facilities for electric vehicle batteries in Fredrikstad, Norway. Hydrovolt claims that its expansion to France builds on the companyʼs valuable experience and existing recycling activities in Norway.
