Fraunhofer Opens Battery “PreFab”

By opening its “PreFab” in Münster, Germany, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft has officially put the “Fraunhofer Research Institution for Battery Cell Production FFB” into operation. With 6,800 square meters of research space, it is considered an important step towards the construction of the larger “FFB Fab”, which is intended to establish Germany as an international leader in battery research in the long term. The “FFB Fab” will later provide 20,000 square meters of production and research space to enable industry-oriented production research in the gigawatt range.

Testing and implementing new battery cell concepts

Both facilities are located in the Hansa-BusinessPark in Münster. The sample line in research production enables Fraunhofer FFB to support industrial partners in the testing and implementation of new battery cell concepts. Production focuses on pouch cells and prismatic cells for various applications. These include electric vehicles, medical technology and “intelligent” electronic devices. Later, round cells will also be tested. The development of the FFB is being funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research with up to 500 million euros. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia is providing up to 320 million euros for land and new buildings.
