Dutch company LionVolt has taken over battery cell production of AMTE Power in Thurso. The Scottish battery manufacturer went into administration earlier in January 2024 following financial difficulties.
First signs in December 2023
In December 2023, AMTE Power had been considering going into administration. Mounting pressure eventually forced the company to seek administration. In consequence, administrators were appointed on January 19th, who on January 25th sold the battery cell manufacturing facility in Thurso to LionVolt.
Conversion to solid state battery production
The site is now being converted to battery cell production by LionVolt. The company intends to produce solid state batteries with its 3D electrode architecture on the existing production line. LionVolt hopes that this will allow the technology to reach the market faster. The acquisition is expected to save 20 jobs at the site.
