Gotion InoBat Batteries has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Slovakian government to support the construction of a planned gigafactory. The deal builds on an agreement from February 2023, in which InoBat and Gotion High-Tech expressed their intention to collaborate on battery technology for electric vehicles and energy storage solutions. Back in September, the partners announced they were looking for a factory location in the Middle-European region.
Choice falls on city in southern Slovakia
The latest memorandum provides for the construction of a battery factory in southern Slovakian city Šurany. The initial annual capacity of 20 gigawatt-hours could later be expanded to up to 40 Gigawatt-hours per year. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2024, with production starting in the second quarter of 2026 and reaching full capacity by 2027.
65 hectares and thousands of jobs
The Slovakian Ministry of Economy has agreed to grant subsidies, provide land, prepare the construction site, and secure the connection to the electricity grid. The Šurany site will be built on an area of 65 hectares and is expected to create thousands of jobs.
