Northvolt has agreed to sell its heavy industry battery systems business to Swedish truck manufacturer Scania. The affected Northvolt Systems Industrial unit develops and produces battery systems for industries such as construction, mining, and agriculture.
Scania already a customer and partner
The sale is part of the ongoing restructuring of the battery manufacturer, which is focusing on large-scale production of battery cells in northern Sweden following financial difficulties and a filing for US bankruptcy protection. Scania, already a customer and partner of Northvolt, plans to integrate the business into its Industrial Drive Solutions unit.
Gdansk site to remain
Northvolt Systems Industrial employs approximately 300 people at its sites in Stockholm and Gdansk. The Polish plant already supplies volume products to customers such as Epiroc and Konecranes. Scania intends to continue production in Gdansk and fulfill existing orders in the course of 2025. The final closing of the sale is subject to regulatory approvals.
