US automaker Tesla has started building a battery production facility in Shanghai which will manufacture energy storage units, so-called megapacks. The plant with total investments amounting to the equivalent of approximately 204 million US dollars will cover an area of 200,000 square meters.
Mass production to start in early 2025
The megafactory is the first one that Tesla is building outside the United States and the companyʼs second facility in Shanghai, following the inauguration of its gigafactory in 2019 which required an initial investment of around seven billion dollars. “In a more open environment, we can achieve a new Tesla speed in the megapack factory and supply the global market with large energy storage batteries made in China,” Teslaʼs Vice President Tao Lin said. Mass production is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2025, with an initial capacity of 10,000 megapack units annually.
