Skeleton Builds SuperBattery Production Facility in France

Skeleton Technologies, a developer and manufacturer of energy storage solutions, announced its expansion into France at a business summit hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris. Over five years, the company plans to invest €600 million in research and development and the production of “SuperBatteries.” “Skeleton will commence research and development of next-generation battery technologies later this year in Toulouse, in the southwest of France,” the company announced. “A mass production facility for ‘SuperBatteries’ is scheduled to be operational by 2027.” Founded in 2009 in Tartu, Skeleton Technologies opened its first facility in Germany, near Dresden, seven years ago. The company’s mass production facility for supercapacitors is currently under construction in Leipzig. Skeleton employs over 130 staff at its headquarters and development center in Tallinn. “We are the first Estonian industrial company to expand into two of Europe’s most important industrial nations, Germany and France. Undoubtedly, this is a milestone for us, paving the way for other Estonian green technology companies,” said Taavi Madiberk, CEO and co-founder of Skeleton Technologies. Toyota Plans to Start Battery Production in North Carolina in 2025

Toyota plans to commence electric vehicle (EV) battery production at its new facility in North Carolina next year. The facility will manufacture battery packs for the company’s hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and EV vehicles. Toyota’s investments in the facility total $13.9 billion and significant progress has been made since construction began at the end of 2022. Sean Suggs, President of Toyota Battery Manufacturing in North Carolina, announced that battery production for EVs is slated to begin in the first quarter of next year. The initial batteries will be destined for an electric vehicle manufactured at Toyota’s Georgetown, Kentucky plant. Suggs reports positively on the current state of developments at the facility, highlighting the intensive testing phase involving around 300 team members on-site daily, with an additional 500 employees working at the main headquarters in Greensboro. Upon completion in 2028, the facility is expected to employ 5,100 people. The North Carolina facility’s production capacity is expected to reach 30 gigawatt-hours of batteries per year, distributed across seven buildings, each housing two production lines. Overall, the facility will encompass ten production lines for future battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid battery packs, and four lines for producing battery packs for hybrid cars. Rock Tech Lithium: Federal Funding Rejected for Battery Project in Guben

The German-Canadian company Rock Tech Lithium received an unexpected rejection from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy for its funding request on Monday. Originally, the company had hoped for support from the “Resilience and Sustainability of the Battery Cell Manufacturing Ecosystem” program, which was established under the EU Commission’s “Temporary Crisis and Transition Framework” (TCTF). Rock Tech Lithium extracts the raw material for electric car batteries from its mining project in Georgia Lake, Ontario, and plans to refine it into battery-ready products in Guben. From 2025 onwards, approximately 24,000 tons of lithium hydroxide are set to be produced annually in Guben, with around 50 percent of the materials sourced from recycled batteries by 2030. Mercedes-Benz has already secured an annual delivery of around 10,000 tons of lithium hydroxide from Guben. The decision from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy surprised the company. CEO Dirk Harbecke expressed optimism regarding regional support, particularly from the Brandenburg state government. Harbecke emphasized that they are in constructive dialogue with local authorities and are confident Brandenburg can mobilize sufficient funds to advance the project. The municipality of Guben also shows significant interest in realizing the battery project. Despite the setback in federal funding, Rock Tech Lithium remains confident that it can contribute to battery production and secure a significant position in Europe’s lithium supply in the long run. Varta AG Initiates Project for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Under the leadership of Varta AG, the research project ENTISE, in collaboration with a consortium of 15 companies and universities, is dedicated to developing innovative cell chemistry for sodium-ion batteries. The three-year project, which begins on June 1st, aims to transfer this cell chemistry into functional formats. ENTISE stands for “Development of Sodium Ion Technology for Industrially Scalable Energy Storage.” The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research supports the project with around 7.5 million euros in funding. A vital component of the project is the production of sufficient quantities of the necessary materials to build robust laboratory samples and prototypes in round-cell design. In the final phase, scaling up and transferring to the pre-industrial sector (piloting) will produce a small series of round cells that enable a robust assessment of properties in practical scenarios. Sodium offers advantages as a raw material regarding accessibility, cost, safety, and recyclability. The challenge lies in transferring this technology into industrially viable and scalable cells, with ENTISE addressing this challenge. “This project represents a milestone in developing sustainable sodium-ion batteries for the German battery community,” says Rainer Hald, CTO of Varta AG. It underscores the need for further innovative and efficient storage technologies alongside the established lithium-ion technology to advance the future of decentralized energy storage and utilization.” Source: https://www.varta-ag.com/de/ueber-varta/aktuelles/details/varta-initiiert-und-koordiniert-neues-projekt-fuer-die-energiespeicherung-der-naechsten-generation
