GM Ventures Invests $10 Million in Forge Nano

General Motors Ventures has announced a $10 million investment in materials science company Forge Nano. Forge Nano specializes in atomic layer deposition and will work with GM to explore potential applications of this technology for batteries. Coating Technology to Reduce Battery Costs Atomic Layer Deposition, marketed by Forge Nano as ‘Atomic Armor’, is a surface technology that deposits extremely thin layers on battery materials to control their chemical properties and structure at the atomic level. Under the partnership, Forge Nano will develop coatings for GM that are intended to both improve battery performance and reduce costs. In particular, the collaboration will focus on coatings for cathode materials. Prototypes of lithium-ion battery cells will be built at Forge Nano’s headquarters in Thornton, Colorado, to demonstrate the potential of the technology. Mercedes-Benz Opens Battery Recycling Plant

Mercedes-Benz has inaugurated Europe’s first battery recycling plant using a combined mechanical-hydrometallurgical process in Kuppenheim, Germany. The company says it has invested tens of millions in the construction of the plant, which will have an annual capacity of 2,500 tons. According to the company, a recovery rate of over 96 percent is expected. Hydrometallurgical Process Reduces Energy Requirements The recycling plant covers all steps from shredding the battery modules to processing the active battery materials. The mechanical process separates plastics, copper, aluminium and iron, while the downstream hydrometallurgical process focuses on the black mass. From this, valuable metals such as cobalt, nickel and lithium are extracted. Compared with conventional pyrometallurgy, this process is less energy-intensive because lower temperatures of up to 80 degrees Celsius are required. Mercedes-Benz is supported by its technology partner Primobius and by funding from the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection. The project, which is being carried out in cooperation with three German universities, is investigating the entire recycling value chain and is expected to help increase recycling capacities in the long term. Indonesia and CATL Form Joint Venture for Battery Production

According to Indonesian state media, the Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC) and CBL International Development, a subsidiary of Chinese battery manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology Co (CATL), have formed a joint venture. The joint venture aims to build a battery cell manufacturing facility in Indonesia. A partnership between the parties was first announced in 2022. Start of Production Planned for 2027 According to IBC, up to USD 1.18 billion will be invested in the plant, which is expected to have a production capacity of 15 gigawatt hours. This capacity will serve both the domestic market and international demand. Production is expected to start in 2027. The Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC) is a state-owned consortium established in 2021 to strengthen Indonesia’s role in the global battery and electric vehicle supply chain. The consortium brings together several state-owned companies from the energy, mining and chemical sectors. A key objective of the IBC is to use the country’s large nickel deposits to establish Indonesia as a major player in the global battery industry.
