U.S.-based company W. L. Gore & Associates has opened a battery laboratory in Shanghai. According to the company, its aim is to accelerate the development and testing of lithium-ion battery materials. The lab will focus on components such as membranes, venting solutions, and systems for pressure equalization, as well as the control of condensation, gas release, and thermal runaway.
Shorter development cycles
The laboratory will serve as a development platform for manufacturers in electric mobility, energy storage, and consumer electronics. Gore promises shorter development cycles through close integration of material development, prototyping, and system integration. With its new location in China, Gore states it also aims to serve regional customers more effectively.
Based on existing technologies
Developments at the new laboratory are based on existing technologies, such as dry electrodes and specific membrane solutions. These technologies are intended to be made available for use in safety-critical systems in vehicles. The Shanghai laboratory is part of Goreʼs broader strategy to strengthen its position in the Chinese market and integrate global research resources into regional development processes.
