Chinese battery manufacturer Gotion High-tech has begun series production of so-called unified cells for Volkswagen. The existing supply agreement covers the period from 2026 to 2032. An initial symbolic delivery has already taken place.
Standardized batery solution
Volkswagen designed the unified cell as a standardized battery solution. Its aim is to serve different cell chemistries and vehicle platforms with a single cell size. Gotion has stated that it will supply lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells as well as other cell chemistries. Production will take place at Gotionʼs headquarters in Hefei, Anhui Province, where the company has established an annual production capacity of 20 gigawatt-hours.
Additional solutions planned
At the handover ceremony, Gotion had also unveiled a battery system based on the unified cell. The company intends to provide additional battery solutions for various Volkswagen vehicle platforms in the future. The Wolfsburg-based group holds a stake in Gotion and is currently its largest shareholder. The two companies began collaborating in 2021 when they signed a framework agreement which included the development of the unified cellsʼ first generation for Volkswagenʼs series models in China.
