Remarketing platform Ayvens Carmarket has introduced a certificate for the state of health (SoH) of traction batteries. This is intended to make the European market for used electric vehicles more transparent. As the battery is the most valuable component of an electric vehicle, its condition is decisive for the carʼs resale value. The SoH indicates how much capacity the battery still has compared to when it was new. It influences both the usable range and buyer confidence. Transparent information on this value is considered an important step in reducing uncertainty when purchasing used electric vehicles.
Data directly from the BMS
The certificate is based on data read directly from the battery management system. The BMS monitors parameters such as voltage, temperature, charging history, and current capacity. The tests are carried out by companies certified by the European Car Remarketing Association (CARA). This is intended to provide buyers with a comprehensible assessment of battery performance, while dealers can use it as a more reliable basis for pricing.
Challenges in SoH determining
Determining the SoH is considered complex, as differences in cell chemistry, driving, and charging profiles make standardized assessment difficult. Furthermore, there are currently no uniform standards across Europe. However, Ayvens aims to ensure a higher degree of objectivity by certifying external providers. The certificates are currently available in several European countries, including Germany, France, Portugal, and the Netherlands. An expansion to other markets is said to be planned. With this offering, Ayvens claims to be responding to existing reservations about battery durability.
