Ford has opened a new production facility for assembling electric vehicle battery packs at its Cologne site. Built in the companyʼs converted former engine plant, the new production line supplies the Explorer and Capri models, which are assembled in the neighboring Electric Vehicle Center.
Standardized and error-free assembly
The production line, which spans around two kilometers, is said to process almost 2,800 components per battery. The housing is equipped with up to twelve battery modules, each of which weighs around 30 kilograms. Ford aims to ensure standardized, error-free assembly with 180 robots on the production line. The plant processes three different battery sizes for electric models built in Cologne. According to Ford, on-site battery production will shorten transport routes and increase efficiency.
