SK On to Supply Battery Cells to Nissan in the USA

Nissan has signed an agreement with South Korean battery manufacturer SK On to ensure the supply of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles in North America. The agreement covers a total volume of nearly 100 gigawatt-hours of high-nickel pouch cells over the period from 2028 to 2033. The battery cells will be produced in the United States and used in vehicles that roll off the production line at the Canton plant in the state of Mississippi.

Joint investment of 1.16 billion dollars

SK On reported that it is investing around 661 million US dollars in production, including machinery and equipment. Nissan itself had previously announced a 500-million-dollar investment to modernize its Canton plant. The collaboration with SK On is part of the Japanese automakerʼs long-term electrification strategy to increase local production of electric vehicles. The agreement marks SK Onʼs first collaboration with a Japanese car manufacturer. The company currently operates two cell factories in the United States and is building four more with partners. Once all projects are completed, SK Onʼs production capacity in North America is expected to exceed 180 gigawatt-hours per year.
