German battery developer CustomCells will be participating in a research project in Baden-Württemberg for the further development of battery cells. As part of the “Roundabout” project, a pilot production facility for large-format round cells is to be built in Tübingen. The state government is funding the project with a total of eight million euros. Research partners are the Baden-Württemberg Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research (ZSW), the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation (IPA) as well as the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).
Accelerating the transition from research to industry
The research focuses on the development and production of large-format round cells with a diameter of 46 millimeters. This design is expected to offer advantages such as high energy density, efficient heat dissipation, and mechanical stability. The aim of the project is to strengthen innovation in the field of battery technology in Baden-Württemberg and to secure industrial value creation in the state. With the intended pilot production in Tübingen, CustomCells aims to accelerate the transition from research to industrial production. Digital production processes and automated manufacturing technologies are set to enable efficient scaling. In addition to customers in Baden-Württemberg, the production will also address the European market.
