Nissan to Source Batteries from SK On for US Market

Japanese automaker Nissan plans to procure batteries for electric vehicles from South Korean company SK On, starting in 2028. According to a report by the Japanese business newspaper Nikkei, Nissan intends to expand its production of electric vehicles in the United States.

Battery supply for 300,000 electric vehicles

The report claims the planned battery supply includes a capacity of 20 gigawatt-hours, which could be sufficient for the production of about 300,000 electric vehicles. SK On already operates several battery factories in the US, including plants in Georgia and joint venture production facilities with Ford in Tennessee and Kentucky. Whether production for Nissan would take place at existing facilities or involve the construction of new production capacity is still open.

Reducing global production capacity by 20 percent

The intended collaboration comes against the background of Nissanʼs restructuring measures, which include the elimination of 9,000 jobs and a 20-percent reduction in global production capacity. The realignment is designed to strengthen Nissanʼs competitiveness in the electric vehicle market while meeting United States regulatory requirements.
