EVE Energy Opens Gigafactory in China

EVE Energy has opened the first production phase of a battery factory in the city of Jingmen in Chinaʼs Hubei province. The facility is expected to reach an annual production volume of 60 gigawatt-hours. EVE Energy claims that the factory producing cells for energy storage systems is the largest of its kind worldwide. According to the company, manufacturing at the site is entirely automated. A quality management system has been implemented that is said to achieve defect rates in the parts-per-billion range.

Focus on large battery cells

EVE Energy specializes in the production of large-capacity battery cells and claims to be the first company to mass produce 628-ampere-hour cells. The larger cells are designed to reduce the cost and complexity of storage systems while increasing energy density and safety. However, large cells also present technical challenges, particularly in the areas of thermal management and efficiency. To address these issues, EVE Energy collaborated with Wuhan University to develop an electrochemical model that optimizes cell internal resistance. According to the company, this helped minimizing heat generation in the cells while increasing efficiency. Findings from this research, along with other proprietary technologies, will be incorporated into battery production at the new factory.
