US battery company QuantumScape claims it has made significant progress in the development of solid-state batteries. QuantumScape has announced the completion and commissioning of its new ‘Cobra’ heat treatment system for the production of ceramic separators of solid-state batteries.
Deployment in volume production from 2025
The company regards ceramic separator production as a key element in the technologyʼs scalability. QuantumScape intends to integrate its new technology into mass production and scale it up to gigawatt-hour production volumes with delivering its first commercial product, ‘QSE-5’, being planned for 2025. Initial prototypes were produced in autumn 2024. In October, the company announced the delivery of the first small volume samples of battery cells for automotive customer testing. According to QuantumScape, the sample has an energy density of 844 watt-hours per liter and can be fast-charged from ten to 80 percent in 12.2 minutes.
