MAN Truck & Bus has celebrated the topping-out ceremony for its new battery plant in Nuremberg, Germany. According to the company, mass production of high-voltage batteries for all-electric trucks and buses will start in April 2025.
Test facilities alongside Production
At the 17,000-square-meter facility, MAN plans to produce up to 50,000 annually. Depending on market developments, the company intends to increase capacity to up to 100,000 units by 2030. The production facility includes more than 50 manual and automated assembly stations as well as seven test benches for quality assurance. Installation of the first systems has already begun.
100-million-euro project
The total investment in the project amounts to approximately 100 million euros. The State of Bavaria is supporting the further development of battery technology with around 30 million euros to enable the integration of laser welding of cells into the production process. The Nuremberg plant is already producing small series of battery packs for MANʼs all-electric vehicles. With the start of mass production, this area will be gradually converted. According to the company, the future focus will be on the development of next-generation batteries and recycling.
