Hyundai Auto Canada is partnering with Canadian company Lithion as its official recycling partner for electric vehicle batteries. The collaboration follows an agreement from 2021 that validated Lithionʼs recycling technology. Under the new contract, Lithion will work with more than 250 Hyundai and Genesis dealers across Canada to support the collection and recycling of lithium-ion batteries.
Collection, transportation and disassembly
As part of the agreement, Lithion will not only collect the batteries, but also transport and professionally disassemble them. The collected batteries will be processed at Lithionʼs new recycling plant in Saint-Bruno, near Montreal. The plant has been commissioned by the battery recycler in June of 2024 and is capable of annually processing 20,000 tons of batteries into a black mass. The company claims to recover 98 percent of the minerals contained in the batteries through its recycling technology.
