According to the Quebec provincial government, the construction of Northvoltʼs planned battery cell factory in Canada could be delayed by up to 18 months due to the ongoing review of the companyʼs expansion plans. Northvolt originally intended to start production at the factory in 2026. In early July 2024, the company revealed that it was reassessing its plans but remains committed to building the gigafactory in Canada.
New schedule until early fall
Northvolt claims that the strategic review could only lead to a revised timeline, with final results expected for the early fall of 2024. In the meantime, planning and site preparation are continuing. Quebec’s Minister of Economy, Pierre Fitzgibbon, said he expects a delay of twelve to 18 months.
Starting with 30 gigawatt-hours per year
The “Northvolt Six” factory is set to be constructed in two phases, with the first one aiming for an annual production capacity of 30 gigawatt-hours. Construction was initially scheduled to begin in late 2023. The site east of Montreal will also include facilities for cathode material production and a recycling plant.
