Samsung SDI and General Motors (GM) have agreed to form a joint venture to produce batteries for electric vehicles in the United States. The two companies had already reached an agreement in principle in April 2023. The partnersʼ gigafactory will be located in New Carlisle, Indiana, on a 680-acre site.
Possible expansion after 2027 start-up
The two companies plan to invest a total of 3.5 billion US dollars in the construction of the new facility. The plant will have an initial capacity of 27 gigawatt-hours per year and is expected to begin mass production in 2027. A possible expansion phase would increase the annual capacity to up to 36 gigawatt-hours. The new plant will produce high-performance prismatic batteries with high nickel content based on NCA chemistry. The cells will be used in future GM electric vehicles.
