US-based battery technology developer Group1 has announced the launch of what it claims to be the worldʼs first 18650 form factor potassium-ion battery. The companyʼs technology is designed to provide a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to lithium batteries that is free of critical minerals such as nickel, cobalt, copper, and lithium. The batteries use commercially available graphite anodes, separators, and electrolyte formulations made from off-the-shelf components. As a result, the technology is claimed to fit seamlessly into existing lithium-ion battery manufacturing processes.
Best combination of performance, safety, and cost
For its new batteries, Group1 has developed the “Kristonite” cathode material which belongs to the class of potassium Prussian white compounds. According to the company, this material offers the best combination of performance, safety, and cost compared to LFP or sodium-ion batteries. Group1 claims that a gravimetric energy density of 160 to 180 watt-hours per kilogram can be achieved. The cells are operated at the standard voltage of 3.7 volts. According to the company, the first sample batteries have already been shipped to Tier 1 OEMs and cell manufacturers.
