South Korean company EcoPro BM, which specializes in cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries, has entered into negotiations with an undisclosed Korean car manufacturer. The aim is to launch electric vehicles with sodium-ion batteries.
Quick production start is possible
EcoPro reports that it has been working on a cathode material for sodium-ion batteries for two years. The company claims it is now in the final stages of development and the technology is already at a level which allows immediate production. According to EcoPro, so far there has been no demand from Korean battery manufacturers. The company further claims that cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries can be produced on the same production lines as lithium-ion cathodes. Despite lower energy density compared to lithium-ion batteries, EcoPro expects the technology to reach the level of lithium-iron-phosphate batteries in one to two years.
