Accelera by Cummins as well as Daimler Truck and PACCAR have entered into a partnership to produce battery cells for electric commercial vehicles and industrial applications in the US. The corresponding gigafactory is said to be offering numerous jobs in the growing “clean technology” sector of the United States. Total investment for the 21-gigawatt-hour factory is expected to be two to three billion dollars.
Focus is on LFP batteries for electric commercial vehicles
The three partners will each own 30% of the joint venture and jointly control it. With a 10% ownership, EVE Energy will contribute its battery cell design and production expertise as a technology partner. The collaboration will initially focus on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology for use in battery electric commercial vehicles. According to Daimler Truck CEO Martin Daum, “this planned joint venture enables economies of scale beyond Daimler Truck.”
