Chinese cell manufacturer CATL has unveiled a fast-charging lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that is said to provide a range of 400 km in 10 minutes. Mass production of the new Shenxing battery is scheduled for the end of this year. Electric vehicles equipped with Shenxing batteries are expected to hit the market in the first quarter of 2024. This was announced by Gao Han, chief technology officer of CATL’s e-car business. According to CATL, the Shenxing battery has improved low-temperature performance and can be charged to 80 percent in 30 minutes even at temperatures as low as -10 °C.
Samsung SDI establishes LFP manufacturing
In parallel, Samsung SDI is starting to produce LFP batteries at its Ulsan plant, establishing the first production line of its kind in South Korea. In negotiations with Ulsan city officials, Samsung SDI also discusses building a modern LFP battery production facility in the Ulsan industrial area. A Samsung SDI representative said whether the LFP batteries will be produced for electric vehicles or energy storage systems has not yet been decided. Final investment decisions could take some time.
Korea focuses on LFP batteries
South Korea is increasingly relying on LFP batteries to compete with China in the highly competitive market. With the increasing number of mid- and low-end electric cars and the growing renewable energy market, the demand for LFP batteries is gaining importance.
