AESC Launches Battery Cell Production at New Gigafactory

Japanese battery manufacturer AESC has commissioned a new production facility for lithium-ion batteries in Sunderland. The plant has an annual capacity of 15.8 gigawatt-hours and will supply batteries for electric vehicles manufactured in the United Kingdom. According to the company, the facility will support the production of the next generation of the Nissan LEAF, as well as other models.

Largest clean room in the United Kingdom

The facility was built on the existing AESC site where the company has operated since 2019. The number of employees is expected to rise to around 1,000 with the commissioning of the new factory – a fourfold increase compared to the previous workforce, according to AESC. In total, the equivalent of more than 1.14 billion euros has been invested in the UK site in recent years. At the heart of the manufacturing facility is the largest clean room of its kind in the United Kingdom.
