SEAT and CUPRA Open Battery System Assembly Plant

SEAT and CUPRA have opened a new battery system assembly plant at their site in Martorell, Spain. According to the companies, construction of the 300-million-euro factory took just over two years. With a production area of almost 64,000 square meters, the plant is designed to produce 300,000 battery systems per year. These batteries will power the “CUPRA Raval” and the “Volkswagen ID. Polo” models, which are scheduled to enter mass production in 2026.

Greater scalability

The battery systems will be manufactured on the basis of Volkswagen Groupʼs MEB+ platform which uses the companyʼs Unified Cell and a cell-to-pack design. The system is compatible with various cell chemistries and will also use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry in the future. According to Volkswagen, the new systems will be usable across brands and enable greater scalability. The factory is directly connected to the vehicle assembly plant via a 600-meter-long bridge. In the future, the plant will also produce other drive concepts, including hybrids and combustion engines. The goal is to achieve a maximum capacity of 600,000 vehicles per year.
