Finnish battery material producer Tracegrow has presented a solution for extracting battery-grade manganese based entirely on recycled raw materials sourced from within the EU. Until now, Europeʼs battery industry has been almost entirely dependent on imported manganese. Using a proprietary process, the company claims it can recover and refine manganese from recycled alkaline batteries and industrial by-products.
Low-carbon extraction and purification
According to Tracegrow, independent validation by the University of Oulu has confirmed that the process consistently delivers manganese sulfate monohydrate with the purity required by battery manufacturers. Compared to the mining and refining of primary ores, the Tracegrow procedure is said to be a low-carbon process protected by patent applications for extraction and purification procedures.
Collaboration with various stakeholders
Tracegrow is working with cathode manufacturers, battery recyclers, OEMs, and investors to validate its technology in production environments and jointly develop commercial applications. The company is currently in talks to support scaling and is exploring both direct collaborations and project financing structures. Tracegrowʼs patented technologies are used in both the agricultural micronutrient and energy storage sectors.
