South Korean battery manufacturer Samsung SDI has entered into an agreement with BMW and US-based company Solid Power to collaborate on a validation project for solid-state batteries. The project aims to evaluate the performance and safety of all-solid-state batteries (ASSB) for potential use in future BMW vehicles. The partnership will see Samsung SDI supplying the cells, Solid Power providing the solid electrolyte, and BMW developing the modules and battery packs.
Advantages in energy density and safety
Unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries, ASSB cells use a solid electrolyte instead of a liquid one. According to the companies involved, the technology offers advantages in terms of energy density and safety. Samsung SDI has operated a pilot production facility in South Korea since 2023 to test ASSB production processes and supply chains. Prototypes are currently being tested in collaboration with numerous customers. BMW and Samsung SDI have worked together since 2009.
