Construction of PowerCo Gigafactory in Canada Begins

Volkswagenʼs battery subsidiary PowerCo has begun construction work on a new battery cell factory in southwestern Ontario, Canada. According to the company, the St. Thomas plant will have an annual capacity of up to 90 gigawatt-hours, making it the largest battery cell manufacturing facility in Canada. The project envisages investments of up to five billion US dollars by 2030.

First gigafactory outside of Europe

Located about 30 kilometers south of the Canadian city of London, the site is in the center of the Great Lakes Automotive Corridor. This industrial region has existing infrastructure and proximity to key markets such as Toronto and Detroit. The St. Thomas facility is PowerCoʼs first gigafactory outside of Europe and will produce battery cells for electric vehicles of the groupʼs brands in North America.

“Unified Cell” technology

Production is scheduled to begin in 2027. PowerCo will use its “Unified Cell” technology the company had introduced in August 2025. This prismatic cell architecture is designed for a cell-to-pack system and is intended to support various cell chemistries.
