BMW Group and Austrian company STIWA Automation have won third E-Mobility Production Awards. The winners in the “Battery Production of the Year” as well as “Electric Motor Production of the Year” and “Process Innovation in Battery Production” categories were announced at the first Battery Production Days (BPD) in Münster, Germany. The event was hosted by Christoph Lienemann, Managing Director of PEM Motion North America. Battery-News was one of the media partners.
“Battery Production of the Year”: BMW plant in Regensburg
At the 2025 E-Mobility Production Awards, BMW Group defended its title as the best electric motor manufacturer from the previous year and celebrated a double victory: This time, the jury also ranked the Munich-based car manufacturer at the top in the battery production category. The award for the Regensburg plant is representative of the “remarkable development of BMW’s entire battery production network in recent years,” according to the official statement from the evaluation committee: “The remarkable ramp-up with high productivity and reliability right from the start was only possible thanks to the structured transfer of experience from the Dingolfing and Leipzig sites.” The group’s battery production network is a leader in innovation throughout the DACH region, which is reflected in a high proportion of self-developed process technology. For example, BMW is a pioneer in cell coating processes for thermal optimization. Meanwhile, since production started in 2022, the Regensburg site has recorded the highest growth in unit numbers in the DACH region and is characterized by high output per area as well as efficient variant management.
“Electric Motor Production of the Year”: BMW plant in Dingolfing
The 2025 award for “Electric Motor Production of the Year” went once again to BMW Group’s Dingolfing site where the production facility had to deliver the highest output per area of all electric motor plants evaluated in the DACH region. “The Dingolfing plant has an exceptionally high proportion of production facilities with in-house developed process technology and a high proportion of in-house manufacturing,” the jury added. The committee claims the fact that the motors produced also demonstrated a high level of reliability is testament to “exceptional process control.” In addition, BMW Group recorded the highest number of patents for electric motors of all OEMs evaluated in 2024 and increased its investment in research and development despite the tense market situation. The Dingolfing plant went into operation eleven years ago. According to the company, since then, more than 1.5 million electric motors, one million high-voltage batteries, and ten million battery modules have been produced at the site.
Reviewed by independent advisory board
According to the organizers, the E-Mobility Production Awards are intended to stimulate exchange within the industry and highlight potential for optimization in factories. For the two awards selected by the jury, the production lines in the DACH region were evaluated with the help of 14 key performance indicators. Quality and market databases, publicly available information, expert surveys, and questionnaires completed by plant management served as the basis for the information. The results were also reviewed by an independent industry advisory board.
“Process Innovation in Battery Production”: STIWA Automation
Meanwhile, the community and the BPD audience voted a lithium-ion cells’ electrolyte filling process developed by the Austrian company STIWA Automation as this year’s most promising “Process Innovation in Battery Production.” In the run-up to the event, numerous applications had been submitted by companies partly from the VDMA Battery Production network. The winner was determined in a two-stage process consisting of a preliminary online vote and a live vote during the “Battery Production Days” in Münster.
The E-Mobility Production Awards are presented annually by the Chair of Production Engineering of E-Mobility Components (PEM) of RWTH Aachen University, its spin-off PEM Motion, and Berylls by AlixPartners. Further information is provided on the awards’ official website.
