Ascend and GEM to Collaborate on Battery Recycling in Europe

Ascend Elements from the United States and GEM group from China have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore opportunities for collaboration on battery recycling and materials production in Europe. Both companies reference the requirements of the EU Battery Regulation and the intended introduction of the EU Battery Passport. These stipulations include the recyclability and traceability of materials.

Regional recycling network

According to both companies, their collaboration will leverage GEMʼs expertise in large-scale recycling and material production alongside Ascend Elementsʼ existing European presence. The goal is to establish a regional battery recycling network, recover critical raw materials, and produce materials for lithium-ion batteries. These efforts aim to create a localized cycle that addresses market demand and regulatory requirements at the same time.

“Pioneer in Chinaʼs circular economy”

Founded in Shenzhen in 2001, GEM describes itself as a pioneer in Chinaʼs circular economy and waste recycling. The company is also active in the fields of hard metals and new energy technologies. Ascend Elements was founded in the United States in 2015 and manufactures battery materials, including lithium carbonate and cathode precursor materials, from recycled sources.
