QuantumScape and PowerCo have expanded their partnership for the commercialization of solid-state battery (SSB) technology. Originally signed in July 2024, the agreement has been amended to accelerate the development of QSE-5 battery cells at the pilot line in San Jose, California. Volkswagen Group subsidiary PowerCo plans to provide up to 131 million US dollars over the span of two years, provided that defined milestones are met.
Five gigawatt-hours per year
According to QuantumScape, the new agreement provides for PowerCo to be involved in the production and automation processes for QSE-5 cells at an early stage. This is expected to enable a faster increase in production capacity and the necessary infrastructure for technology transfer. PowerCo will thus have the right to produce up to five gigawatt-hours of QSE-5-based cells annually. These rights also apply to customers outside the Volkswagen Group. Additionally, through the agreement, PowerCo will gain access to certain future QuantumScape technologies.
