United States-based company Lyten has announced that it will take full control of Northvolt Dwa ESS, Europeʼs largest manufacturing facility for battery energy storage systems, located in Gdansk, Poland. The 25,000-square-meter production and research facility was previously owned by Northvolt Systems. The Swedish battery manufacturer had announced the sale of this business unit at the end of 2024 as part of a strategic review. The final takeover is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2025.
Production to continue immediately
Lyten plans to resume production in Poland immediately to fulfill existing and new orders. The factory, which has been in operation since 2023, currently has an annual production capacity of up to six gigawatt-hours. According to Lyten, there are prospects for the factory to be expanded to a capacity of more than ten gigawatt-hours per year. The company also intends to manufacture energy storage systems based on lithium-sulfur batteries in Gdansk. Lyten describes this technology as resource-efficient because it relies on locally available materials that do not contain nickel, cobalt, or manganese. The batteries reportedly also have a higher energy density and can withstand larger temperature fluctuations. Lyten previously took over production capacities from Northvolt in California to increase production of its lithium-sulfur cells.
